Icky Substance Found In “Whole Foods” Salad

Soy

I have to go to the grocery store this week and I’m TOTALLY dreading it.

Do you get overwhelmed by the amount of “health food” available? Is it hard to spot the truly healthy food from the impostors? Does your head spin when you read food labels?

Yeah, that’s me sometimes.

In fact, I actually stopped reading food labels a couple years ago when I stopped shopping in the aisles and began buying only whole, unpackaged, unprocessed foods.

However, I have gone BACK to reading labels as I found out recently that my Whole Foods prepared foods were loaded with icky chemicals I don’t want to go anywhere near!

BEWARE: Even if you only shop at Whole Foods, Trader Joe’s, or another awesome ‘healthy foods’ retailer…

… There are still sneaky chemicals in some of the foods you may be taking home.

There Was Definitely No Chicken In My Chicken Salad…

My husband and I love chicken, tuna and egg salads.  When we make them at home we use greek yogurt, avocado, or even hummus instead of mayonnaise because we generally try to avoid canola oil.

But the last time I went to Whole Foods, I noticed a beautiful ‘Blackened Chicken Salad’ for sale with colorful carrots, green onion and even cayenne spice.

When I got home, I noticed that the chicken salad was not a chicken salad at all: it was made with SOY nuggets – not chicken.

SOY NUGGETS!?!?!? What’s the big deal?

I try to avoid soy for MANY reasons.

Here are the top SEVEN…

1.  Soy Makes You Girly…

Soy has a bad rep for making girly men…

Yep, it’s believed to even cause gynecomastia (man boobs) in men.

It is believed that soy can also potentially promote hormonal cancers in some people.

2.  It Affects Your Thyroid…

Soy negatively affects our thyroid gland.

The thyroid’s purpose is to create, store and release thyroid hormones into your blood.

It helps control your body’s functions… and with too little thyroid hormone in your blood, your body actually slows down.

3.  GMO’s.  Need I Say More?

Probably not… but I’ll go on…

90% of the soy sold for consumption contains GMO’s.

You can hardly avoid soy-derived GMO’s!

They’re found in salad dressings via soybean oil.  They’re also found in commercial baked goods, like bread or cookies in the form of soy flour.

4.  Soybeans Have Enzyme Inhibitors…

This may harm your body’s ability to digest proteins.

In fact, soy is linked to digestive problems, including amino acid deficiency.

5.  Soy Is High In Phytates…

Phytic acid BLOCKS your body’s ability to absorb minerals such as calcium, magnesium and zinc.

Phytates also are linked to mineral deficiencies in many countries.

You shouldn’t have this problem with tempeh due to it’s fermentation process, but you should definitely avoid soymilk, fake soy products (like my “mock” chicken) and tofu.

6.  Avoid Processed Foods…

Most soy requires tons of processing, including pressure and heat, in order to make it edible.

This also makes it hard to digest.

This may be the reason many people are allergic to soy; it’s actually a really allergenic food!

Soy milk is the worst.  They’re soaked in a chemical that produces the carcinogen “lysinealine”.

BEWARE: If you have children, baby formulas are often made with soy protein isolate; which is riddled with chemicals and may be bad for digestion, as well.

7.  Soy Is Hard To Digest…

Oxalates and lectins in soy both make it hard to digest.

Oxalates may even cause kidney stones: one of the most painful things in the world if you ask anybody who’s had them!

Lectins are even scarier: they may cause clotting of red blood cells and immunologic problems.

So the next time you are in the grocery store, remember that sometimes it’s not worth the convenience of those prepackaged “health foods” when they don’t even contain healthy ingredients!

Always, ALWAYS read the labels of the food you are putting into your body. Your health and your family’s health is on the line!
